Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication report a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
