The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Secure the Job That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a travel partner. Since my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a big multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He asked me what I did, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the university – right next door to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I should apply for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student came up to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but straight off informed my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where anything feels possible – she declared: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in multiple respects. I lacked the courage or nerve to approach someone at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Additionally, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
